Enguera is home to a number of museums that are well worth a visit: Museo Etnológico (the ethnological museum), is one, and Museo Arqueológico (the archaeological museum) is another, which is housed in the old post office. Constructed in 1929, the building was refitted and turned into a museum in 2007. The original Neoclassical façade still decorates the outside of the building.
The museum has three floors where you can see the palaeontological and archaeological findings discovered in the various sites in Sierra de Enguera. The first floor houses the town art gallery and various rooms relating to the running of the museum, such as laboratories and offices. The gallery hosts temporary exhibitions and pieces belonging to the Garnelo family.
On the second floor, you can take a look around the archaeological exhibition which is full of important pieces that speak of the Region of Valencia in the prehistoric period. Many of the objects are unique. The highlight of the exhibition are the pieces from the Iberian period. The archaeological site at Cerro de Lucena yielded the majority of the decorative objects and ceramic remains in the collection.
Before too long, your eyes will be drawn to the collection of Valencian Gothic ceramic vases that were discovered in Coveta Santa. If you’re not sure what to do during your time in Enguera, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the museum and be transported thousands of years back in time through the fascinating pieces on display.
