The village of Montesa is dominated by a great castle, a must-visit during your time in this part of La Costera.

Dating all the way back to Celtiberian or Roman times, Castillo de Montesa was of great importance during the Muslim period due to its strategic position.

The castle perches atop the rock to which the village of Montesa clings. You can follow a well-signposted route up to the great fortress where you will discover that the Order of Montesa – which was given the castle by King James II of Aragon – was in charge during its heyday. Thanks to its strategic location, the Montesa knights chose the castle to be their headquarters and completely renovated it in the Gothic Valencian style.

During your visit today, you can see a number of the castle's rooms. Some are in a state of ruin as the castle was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1748. You can, nevertheless, still see the church, refectory, chapterhouse and more, all of which are surrounded by a sturdy curtain wall. The most valuable pieces, such as the door to the Maestro’s rooms, have been moved to Palau de la Generalitat in València city for conservation purposes.

Castillo de Montesa, Museo Parroquial, La Asunción church and Museo de la Almazara are all great reasons to come and explore Montesa, a beautiful municipality affording spectacular vistas over the surrounding agricultural land. While you’re there, make sure you try a dish of arroz al horno (oven-baked rice) or arròs amb fesols i naps (rice with beans and turnip).
