Montesa is located in the province of Valencia and La Costera, a county that has plenty of surprises up its sleeves. The village is a great destination for connecting with local history and traditions. It’s also a great choice for hikers, who will find all sorts of lovely trails to walk time and again. Fancy taking a look around?
What to do in Montesa
A visit to Montesa promises a wide range of experiences. Start by exploring the historic centre, stopping off at La Vila Plaza, where you can see the Town Hall. Next, visit Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Parish Church, a 17th century place of worship that sits in the same plaza.
Take your time to wander around the plaza and the village’s most historic streets where you will see façades decorated with old ceramic altarpieces and coats of arms. Next on your to-visit list is the Collection of the Montesa Parish Museum, which we certainly recommend setting aside some time to visit.
The sight you simply have to see in Montesa is the Gothic castle. Perched atop a hill rubbing shoulders with the centre, the castle as you can see it today was constructed in the 13th century though beneath it is an Iberian-Roman building. The fortress was damaged by an earthquake in the 18th century and follows the layout of typical Cistercian monasteries.
The silhouette of Montesa Castle perched up high is unbelievably picturesque. In the summer evenings, the castle sometimes acts as a venue for unforgettable concerts.
The time has come to venture a little further outside Montesa and spend time in lovely places like the Stations of the Cross and El Cristo de la Agonía Chapel, and La Santa Cruz Chapel. And if you fancy it, you can pull on your walking shoes and hike to the ruins of La Nevera Ice House, an old refuge and Barranc de la Fosch Municipal Natural Park.
This beautiful scenery, in Serra Grossa, is populated with gorges, riverscapes, a wide variety of flora and fauna, old houses and beautiful views of Montesa Castle. Don’t miss it.
