Are you touring medieval Xàtiva? Then you must visit the Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol, San Pedro Apóstol Church.
It is one of the main Christian centres established after the conquest of Jaume I in 1244. Located in the square of the same name, it sits just opposite the old San Onofre Convent. It was built in the 14th century on the remains of an old mosque, clearly reflecting the city's religious transition.
The church has a rectangular floor plan with diaphragm arches and a spectacular polychrome wooden ceiling decorated in geometric, plant and heraldic motifs.
Inside, there are some valuable works of art, such as the San Pedro and San Pablo Altarpiece, containing panels painted around 1400, and also the San Miguel and San Jorge Altarpiece, attributed to the Master of Xàtiva. During the last restoration, 26 underground crypts were discovered, which can now be visited in the church's north-east corner.
Exploring medieval Xàtiva's churches and convents is a unique way to delve into the city's living history. This is an essential tour for those wanting to discover the historical soul of the Valencian Community!
