Sometimes, as you roam the mountains, you come across the most fantastic historic sites. This is certainly the case of Cava Gran in Agres, an ice house dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The structure is beautifully preserved, showcasing masonry that has withstood the test of time.

The purpose of Cava Gran in Agres (also known as Cava Arquejada) was to store snow to produce and then later commercialise ice. Considered a Site of Local Interest, the structure sits amid the mountainscape of Sierra de Mariola natural park.

If you’re interested in visiting the ice house, the best way to get there is by walking Senda dels Nevaters. This 12km route will lead you deep into stunning natural scenery and treat you to breath-taking views from El Montcabrer refuge.
