Listed an Event of National Tourist Interest, Fiestas de la Reconquista y de Moros y Cristianos fills the streets of Orihuela with traditions every July.

Ever since the year 1400, Orihuela has held a festival commemorating legends and historic events. According to a legend known as Leyenda de la Armengola, a Christian woman warned the Christians in the town about Bezaddon’s (the Moorish governor of the castle) dangerous plan. Santa Justa and Santa Rufina are said to have appeared to help the Christians.

For centuries, the town has celebrated a festival revolving around this legend and Enseña del Oriol, the town flag.

During the festival, the battles are enacted in a spectacle of parades, gunpowder, band music and extravagant costumes. You will see the moment in which the Moorish governor is forced to admit defeat and hand over the keys to the town.

The highlight of the festivities is Enseña del Oriol, when the town authorities and representatives, alongside the Moors and Christians associations, pay homage to the town flag. You can also see offerings of flowers, children’s parades, retreta festera, costumes, dances, parades of carriages and much more. Come to Orihuela to see it all for yourself.
