Discover one of Orihuela's most emblematic monuments, its magnificent cathedral, and explore a city steeped in history.

The Iglesia Catedral del Salvador y Santa María, Cathedral of El Salvador and Santa María in Orihuela, Alicante, is a magnificent place of worship that you simply cannot miss on your itinerary through the town. In all probability, originally built over an ancient mosque in the 14th century, this cathedral in Orihuela initially followed the Catalan or Levantine Gothic style, with three naves. Over the years, Renaissance elements were added, such as those that can be seen in the bell tower, the transept and the Annunciation Gateway.

The Cathedral of El Salvador and Santa María in Orihuela is particularly notable for the Puerta de las Cadenas, or Gate of Chains on its main façade, the pillarless transept and its Renaissance cloister. We also invite you to admire the Gothic grillwork in some of the chapels and in the presbytery.

Be sure to include this spectacular building in your visit to Orihuela, a town packed with sights, where art and tradition take centre stage.
