Stroll the streets of Sant Mateu and discover the fascinating buildings that define its historic centre.

New Court, is a 15th century palace that you can’t miss on your explorations of this part of El Baix Maestrat. It has a large stonework façade with four trilobed windows, divided with mullions that flood the space with plenty of natural light.

The building has been a Townhall since the early 15th century. So why was it also known as the New Cort? The building replaced the former townhall that stood between the 13th and 14th centuries, which was known as the Old Court. The latter was situated on La Cort street where you can still visit the medieval dungeons today.

Rubbing shoulders with Sant Mateu Townhall is Borrull Palace, a building from the same period. Together, these buildings comprise a fascinating collection of the Valencian Gothic style

As you take a wander through Sant Mateu you will be immersed in the village’s past. Whichever way you look there will be a street, building or monument with centuries and centuries of history behind it. So what are you waiting for? Come and explore this charming destination.
