Palacio Borrull, Borrull Palace, stands beside Sant Mateu Town Hall and is one of the finest examples of Valencian Gothic style. The striking facade of ashlar masonry and the elegant tri-lobed arch windows allowing natural light to flood in are key features of this grand building.
The advisor to the Lieutenant of the Order of Montesa, Don Sans, originally lived here in the 17th century. Later, the Vilanova family resided here, until eventually the palace was handed over to the Borrull family. Between 1883 and 1892, the house started being used as a criminal court for the judicial districts of Sant Mateu, Albocàsser, Morella and Vinaròs, which is where the landmark gets its popular name “L’Audiència”, hearing, in English.
This palace not only impresses thanks to its Gothic architecture, but also the rich history of the region present within its walls creates a fascinating visit. Step inside for a journey back in time, before exploring the streets of Sant Mateu and sitting down for a delicious meal to sample the local cuisine. Is there a better plan?
