Located in L’Horta Nord, el Puig de Santa Maria is a must-visit if you enjoy soaking up some culture and the sunny Mediterranean atmosphere during your getaways. Not only does the town have plenty of sights that tell the story of its past, but the beach is nearby, making it a great place to take a stroll along the soft, golden beaches. Fancy coming for an explore?

What to do in el Puig de Santa Maria

If you want to discover what el Puig de Santa Maria is all about, the best way to start is by exploring its culture and history. The town played an important role during the Jaime I period in València. Many of the destination’s great buildings and monuments date to this period, like Cebolla Castle. Sitting atop a hill, this fortress has a long and valiant history as it was used by El Cid for a short period.

Another sight to put on your must-visit list is Sant Jordi Chapel. Built in 1631, the chapel is used to commemorate the battle of el Puig. It hosts most of the commemorations marking Jaime I’s entrance into the city.

Ara Christi Charter House is another site well worth visiting during your time in el Puig de Santa Maria. For a time, this Carthusian monastery was a functioning religious building; nowadays, however, the monastery will transport you back in time to enjoy the artistry it houses.

El Puig de Santa Maria’s most iconic building is Santa María Royal Monastery. This Renaissance religious building was built in 1238 by Jaime I. Inside you can visit the cloisters, the royal salon, the Gothic salon and a replica of King Jaime I’s sword.

To complete your trip, we’d recommend visiting the beaches, where you can see a Renaissance Watch Tower that has been overlooking the sea for centuries. Enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine in el Puig de Santa Maria!
