Nuestra Señora de la Asunción parish church in Albaida sits on Plaza Pintor Segrelles. Located inside what used to be the old walled town, the church you can see today was built in the 17th century on the walls of the old Romanesque church dating back to the 13th century. The result is impressive and we highly recommend taking a visit to soak up each and every detail.
In the interior you will find works by a number of religious artists. Not only are there works by the Neorealist sculptor Galarza, the altarpiece of the high altar and the cama imperial of La Mare de Déu de l'Agost are by Pere Foix, and the lunettes and Bautismo chapel are decorated by the work of local illustrator José Segrelles. In the 18th century arch providing access to the church, you can see a section of the Baroque decoration of the old Stations of the Cross, as well as the image of La Mare de Déu del Remei.
The church has a central plan with chapels among the buttresses. There is one nave to which a Neoclassical chapel, dedicated to the patron saint of the town, was added at a later date. Make sure you take your time to marvel at the high altar when visiting the church: it is a spectacular Late Renaissance piece.
The exterior has two entrances. The church is open to visitors during times of worship. If you're wondering what to do in Albaida, make the most of the opportunity to take a look around a sight that will leave you lost for words.
