Visit Alfarb Castle, an Islamic tower with Roman roots, set against a scenic backdrop.

In the heart of the little village Alfarb, in the county of La Ribera Alta, lives the remains of a very old castle. The story begins during Roman times and continues up until the Muslim rule. Built during the Islamic period on top of the foundations of an ancient Roman country estate, this 12th-century tower played a pivotal role in defending and controlling the strategic river Magre crossing. It also served as a crucial link between Albufera and the Islamic route connecting Xàtiva to Llíria.

The original Alfarb Castle tower was taller and crowned by crenels, forming part of the defence system that also included farmhouses and fortifications in the mountains, valleys and rivers. When Jaume I took over, the area was given to Pero de Montagut.

Today, you can visit the square tower and also some of the original defence walls in plaza de Dalt. Step inside and you’ll find information panels and display cases that offer a window into the landmark’s ancient past. While in Alfarb, don’t forget to check out San Jaime Aspóstol Parish Church, which dates back to the 18th century and features an incredible ceramic dome. Take a stroll around Alfarb’s historic centre for an authentic rural experience and enjoy the natural backdrop of patchwork fields and vineyards.
