El Puig de Santa Maria is a small town with a big history. There are various sights throughout the municipality that tell the story of its past, as is the case with Sant Jordi chapel.
This small place of worship was built in 1631 to commemorate the battle at El Puig de Santa Maria, which opened the city of València up to James I of Aragon.
The chapel is devoted to San Jorge (Saint George) as, legend has it, the saint helped the Christians achieve their victory. While historically fascinating, the chapel is also a beautiful place nestled in pretty grounds populated by leafy trees.
As you step foot inside the chapel, you will see a number of mosaic panels that tell the story of the battle. There is also a cross in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the fighting. On the 9 October every year, events are held to commemorate James I of Aragon’s seizure of València.
If you are planning on spending some time in El Puig de Santa Maria and are keen to find out more about the Region of Valencia’s past, make sure you stop off at this lovely chapel.
