Come and visit the ruins of what was once a great medieval fortress.

If during your time in Argelita you pass through Plaza de la Iglesia, you will see two towers that hold centuries and centuries of history. They are the only remains of Ceyt Abu Ceyt Castle Palace that are still standing.

Dating back to medieval times, this palace-fortress was the residence of Ceyt Abu Ceyt, a Muslim king, after the pacts made with King Jaime I. Upon his death in 1269, it was handed to his son Fernando Pérez, a relative of the Aragon nobility.

In the year 1942, the walls of the castle in Argelita were demolished, leaving just the two towers standing. They are listed a Site of Cultural Interest.

The first tower is rectangular with four storeys and a crenellated top. Built with stone, it has windows with a stone lintel and segmental arches. The tower was first reformed in 1881. The second tower is round, taller than the other and has an Arab inscription from the 13th century.

Both towers were restored in 1986 and remain in a good condition. Nowadays they house an ethnological museum where you can see valuable old tools that give you an insight into Argelita’s history. Visit the towers and enjoy the local heritage. It is the responsibility of each and every one of us to take care of it.
