Listed a municipal natural area, El Castell in Atzeneta del Maestrat is a beauty spot defined by diverse landscapes and abundant plant and wildlife. Comprising mostly of woodland, El Castell is located next to the castle and affords breathtaking vistas over scenery populated with Mediterranean species including rosemary and lentisk. If you’re lucky, you might spot some animals such as genets and wildcats in their natural habitat.

During your time in Atzeneta del Maestrat, make sure you visit La Vall and Torrosselles gorges which slice their way through the landscape. You should also put the castle on your to-visit list, alongside the pretty chapels which are the focal point of local pilgrimages.

This area has been inhabited for centuries as is evidenced by the remains found at the various archaeological sites in the surrounding area. The Ermita de San Joan site, for instance, contains findings dating all the way back to the Bronze Age as well as the remains of a later Medieval settlement.

El Castell is a wonderful destination if you fancy doing some great walking, spotting birds like sparrowhawks and scops owls and looking for amphibians in the pools which are full of water all year round.
