Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción, Santa María de la Asunción Church in Benassal, is an architectural and historic treasure that combines the Gothic and the Baroque styles. The church was built in the 14th century by the Order of Montesa and was extended between the 17th and 18th centuries.
In spite of the damage caused during the Spanish Civil War, the church still has interesting features like the 33 m-tall bell tower, which was built on top of a medieval tower in 1689. The church plan consists of one main nave with side chapels, a crossing and a square tower at the foot of the place of worship.
What’s more, Benassal Parish Church is home to a collection of Gothic and Plateresque religious ornaments in addition to valuable pieces made of gold. Inside, you can see “The Last Supper”, a group of iron sculptures by José Gonzalvo as well as "frontal de la Assumpta" and "llit de la Verge". On the southern façade, you can see another of José Gonzalvo’s mural, "La Carta Pobla", a sculpture paying homage to the village and its history.
Take your time to explore Benassal, soak up its cultural heritage, photograph Bulc Tower and discover the ruins of the walls.
