Taking advantage of the fact that we are already in the spring season, and as we have done on other occasions, the Tile Museum has thought of developing a ceramic garden to remind us of the importance of developing a sustainable transformation of nature. Ceramics is a clear example of the transformation of natural products into artificial products created by man; the same happens with gardens, which are places created, designed and interpreted by men and women from the flowers, plants and trees that we can find in nature and that are so essential for our survival. A garden with flowers and plants made in ceramics and the debate on a more sustainable society from the tiles of the Museum, will serve to sensitize the participants to the respect for nature and its beauty that inspires us so much in our creations. In this way, we position ourselves in favor of sustainability in the face of climate change, we approach the achievement of the goals set by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the UN (United Nations General Assembly) to achieve a common social goal: to transform our world through global and human sustainable development. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

The activity is framed within the Sustainable Development Goals for this purpose. Specifically, in this activity we will focus on goals number 4 (Quality education), 11 (Sustainable cities and communities) and 15 (Life of terrestrial ecosystems).

The procedural objectives of the session are:

  • To sensitize the participants in the knowledge of different aspects related to the “tile culture”.
  • To enjoy a different morning with the family
  • To experiment with an unusual expressive material such as ceramics.
  • To bring the participants closer to different techniques of ceramic elaboration and decoration.
  • Encourage collaborative work between different members of the same family.
  • Encourage the creative capacity of the participants
  • To introduce participants to the stylistic evolution of tiles through the representation of plants and flowers.
  • To encourage discussion on sustainability and nature.

What are we going to do?

We will work on different styles, aspects and elements of tile decoration developed throughout history and that we find in the permanent collection exhibited at the Museum: figuration and abstraction, realism, naturalism, schematism, symmetry and asymmetry, etc... taking as a reference, since we are in spring, the representations of plants, trees, flowers and garden landscapes. We will pay special attention to the evolution of the rose motif, which has been transforming its representation as the different stylistic periods of tile decoration have passed. But plants and flowers are not only represented in tiles, the Museum has an excellent collection of decorative ceramics where varied styles of these spring-like elements are also suggested.

Procedure:

  • Visit-debate to the collections of the Museum of Tiles and shaped ceramics, where we will look for, chat and discuss about the floral representations that appear to us to the exposed pieces and about the sustainability of nature.
  • Ceramic workshop of elaboration of pieces in clay and decoration of tiles with glaze on the elements discussed at the exhibitions.
  • The artistic creations of the children will form the assembly in the hall of the Museum of a ceramic garden with all the pieces developed so that everyone can contemplate them.
