Las Fallas de Cullera, Cullera’s Fallas festival, represents the evolution of a deep-rooted tradition, in which members of the carpenters’ guild would create a bonfire with the old items from their workshops. Over time, these materials were transformed into sculptures, or ninots, leading to the colourful Fallas festival that we know today.
Culleras Fallas festival includes traditional events such as the initial plantà, where the larger sculptures, or fallas, are erected, and must be set up by 16th March. That morning, the sound of firecrackers marks the start of the festival with the energetic despertà.
Expect parades, prize giving ceremonies, flower offerings in honour of Virgen del Castillo, and a large fireworks display on the night of the 18th, known as Nit del Foc. On the 19th, the festival culminates in the cremà, a fiery extravaganza where the colourful and humorous fallas are set alight. Would you like to go on a trip for a few days to experience Cullera’s Fallas festival in person? Be sure to carve out some time during your holiday to visit the castle and go on a walk around the scenic L’Albufera Natural Park
