If you’re considering running away to the inland for a getaway full of spectacular scenery and historic heritage, come with us to explore the perfect destination – Tuéjar.
Located in Los Serranos county, Tuéjar is a municipality bursting with rural charm and beauty that makes a great destination if you’re in search of great hiking trails and a historic centre populated with fascinating heritage. It is also home to an interesting archaeological site. Time to start planning your trip, perhaps?
What to do in Tuéjar
To start, we’d recommend taking a wander through the centre to discover the blue and white façades that characterise the destination. Tuéjar is an incredibly photogenic place. Beyond strolling the streets, we’d recommend popping your head into Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles Parish Church, which dates from the 17th century.
Another point of interest is Los Santos Gate, which used to give access to the part of Tuéjar that was walled. Here you will find an interesting ceramic altarpiece, the first of several built in the 19th century that you will find dotted around the municipality. You will also want to visit “Cubo”, an old Muslim tower that was later turned into a wine barrel. The views from here are lovely.
La Inmaculada Chapel is another must-visit as well as San Cristóbal Chapel, which is located somewhat outside the centre and affords excellent panoramic vistas. Tuéjar even has some rock art located in Corrales de Silla rock shelters, which have been listed World Heritage by UNESCO. An easy trail will lead you to the site.
If you’re looking for things to do in the great outdoors, Tuéjar has an interesting to-visit list. You could start by heading to Peña Cortada Aqueduct or walking to El Nacimiento del Río Tuéjar, a natural area where you will find the recreational area surrounding El Azud, which is home to a lovely pool known as Pozo de las Escaleras. The water here is 18°C all year round.
Another option is to climb up to La Peña del Mediodía Viewing Point or visit El Saz Fountain. Alternatively, you could do some birding, perhaps even spotting vultures, at La Lácaba, which is close to El Azud, where you can find a medieval ice house. Tuéjar is also an excellent destination to enjoy astrotourism. Put it on your list of destinations you want to visit.
