Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción, La Asunción Parish Church in Albocásser, located in L’Alt Maestrat in the province of Castellón, sits in the town’s Plaza Mayor, where you will also find the Town Hall. In the 17th century, the decision was taken to replace the original Gothic place of worship with a Baroque-style church, which was expanded up to the year 1689 when its demolition was ordered. Six years later, the church that you can see today was finished, complete with a bell tower.
The church has three naves without crossings and side chapels but with half barrel vaults and lunettes. Despite suffering significant damage during the Carlist Wars and the Spanish Civil War, the interior is still home to a Gothic altarpiece depicting Virgen de la Esperanza, countless gold and silver pieces and fascinating ornaments that are well worth taking your time to admire. If you’re keen to keep delving into Albocásser’s past, make sure you visit San Pablo Chapel and Hospice, which is just 3.5 km from the destination. We look forward to seeing you.
