Santuario de la Mare de Déu, Mare de Déu Sanctuary, is one of Cullera’s most cherished and historic landmarks. Situated beside Cullera castle, this sacred place rich in beauty and tradition, is dedicated to the town’s patron saint.
Built between 1891 and 1897, this Neo-Byzantine style building was the home of a Franciscan community until 2007. Admire the majestic bell tower and the shimmering copper-hued dome of glazed tiles. The church houses a collection of 18th and 19th-century ceramic artworks that were moved from the old chapel in 1925.
The sanctuary is steeped in legend, adding a layer of mystique to this historical site. It is said that a shepherd from Utiel, while tending his flock near Santa Marta chapel, heard a sound coming from a nearby cave. When he went to investigate, he found two statues of the Virgin May, one missing an arm. The shepherd gave the damaged statue to the Cullera clergy and the other to his parish in Utiel. However, the next day, the two statues had mysteriously swapped places.
Make sure you take a peek into this beautiful building flooded with history.
