Marenyet Tower is an old watch tower that defended this stretch of Mediterranean coastline from pirates. Check it out.

Ever wondered what Cullera was like when pirates were around? Visit Torre de Marenyet, Marenyet Tower, to find out. Built in 1577 during the reign of Felipe II to protect the region from Barbary pirates, this iconic tower formed part of an extensive network of watch towers that stretched along the Valencian coast. The towers served to protect the mouth of river Júcar and defend the river port

Named after the marshy area it was built on, the land where the tower stands was cut off from the river after a flood in 1864, leaving the river to divert north. Marenyet Tower was notable thanks to its strategic position from where soldiers, called "atalladors", would communicate with other soldiers in towers such as Cap del Far and Cola de la Albufera, which sadly no longer exist today.

The 15-metre tall tower’s unique truncated shape and ten-metre perimetre is an impressive sight to behold. Today, the historic landmark has been completely restored and is now declared a site of Cultural Interest.
