Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Remedio, Nuestra Señora del Remedio Chapel in Titaguas in Los Serranos, tells the story of the village's past. This architectural treasure is situated on a mound to the north of the village, affording impressive vistas over Titaguas. The building sits on a platform that fuses perfectly with the surroundings and is encircled by a solid wall: the section facing the village looks like a bastion.
Dating back to the 17th century, the place of worship has survived tumultuous periods. During the Carlist Wars, and in the year 1834 in particular, the chapel was turned into a military fort, suffering serious damage during the conflict. Once the war was over, it was rebuilt in the year 1839. Its present-day appearance, however, is the result of a meticulous restoration in 1942.
Despite being used as a military fort, the chapel still counts a number of impressive features. The western façade has a small porticoed patio and there are 10 loop holes on the southern side and 6 loop holes on the northern side. Though the most recent restoration filled in most of these, you can still see four overlooking the patio.
Nuestra Señora del Remedio Chapel is a must-visit if you’re keen to soak up Titaguas' rich local history during your time in the village. Throw yourself into the past and the beauty of the chapel, which is a fundamental part of Titaguas and a lasting testament to its historic legacy.
